What Makes Lyon
Different to Drive
Lyon has a low emission zone, and unlike the one in Paris it is enforced rather than educational. The Métropole applies it to the city and several communes around it, filtering the older engines, and the standard tightens on a published schedule. A car hired without checking is a car that may not legally reach your hotel.
The city is built between two rivers, and that geometry is the real constraint. The Presqu'île sits on the strip between the Rhône and the Saône with a limited number of bridges at each end, and Vieux Lyon on the far bank is a UNESCO quarter of narrow streets where a saloon does not belong. Add the Fourvière tunnel, which carries the north-south motorway traffic straight through the middle of the city and seizes without warning, and journey times stop being a function of distance.
Lyon's airport lies about 25 km east, half an hour on a clear road. It is also the practical alternative to Geneva for the northern Alps in winter.
Between the rivers, from Bellecour to the Terreaux. Access is fine, stopping is not, and the underground car parks are the working answer.

The vineyards start thirty minutes north and the Rhône corridor runs south towards Provence. Both are comfortable days out with an early start.
Lyon fills twice over. It is a congress city, with Eurexpo drawing trade shows through the year, and it is a gastronomic one, which keeps the restaurants booked and the evenings busy in a way few cities of its size manage. The Fête des Lumières in December then closes the centre for four nights and brings in crowds the road network was never sized for. In that week we agree pick-up points outside the perimeter and walk you in, because nothing else works.
