What Makes Monaco
Different to Drive
Monaco is barely two square kilometres, which sounds like an advantage until you drive it. The principality is a hillside, its streets are stacked in tiers linked by ramps and tunnels, and almost nothing is parked at street level. Cars go underground, into public car parks, and the practical question is never where to park but which entrance leaves you closest to the door you actually want. That is local knowledge, and it is the difference between arriving at a Monte-Carlo address and arriving two levels below it.
The principality has no airport. Nice Côte d'Azur is around 30 km along the coast, half an hour when the road is clear and appreciably more when it is not, and the helicopter link covers the same distance in about seven minutes. Which of the two makes sense depends on the hour, the luggage and the weather, and we will say so rather than default to the more expensive option. See our Nice chauffeur service for the airport end.
Three roads connect Monaco to Nice, and choosing between them is most of the job.
The coast road through Villefranche and Beaulieu. The prettiest and the slowest, and unusable in summer at the wrong hour.
The middle road through Èze. Usually the sensible compromise, and the one we take most often.
Fastest when it flows, and the first to seize up. It feeds Monaco through tunnels that close for events without much notice.
Monte-Carlo, La Condamine, Fontvieille and the Rock all sit at different heights. A journey of four hundred metres on a map can mean three levels and a tunnel.
Two events reorganise the whole state. The Monaco Yacht Show takes over Port Hercule from 23 to 26 September 2026, with around 120 superyachts alongside and the quays closed well before the doors open. The Grand Prix returns in late May, and because the circuit is made of public roads the town starts closing weeks ahead for the grandstands and reopens gradually afterwards. In both periods a car cannot simply be summoned, so we place chauffeurs on standby for the full week and agree the pick-up points in advance with the organisers.
