What Makes Dubai
Different to Drive
Dubai is built around one spine, Sheikh Zayed Road, and crossing the city means crossing it. Salik, the toll system, reads a tag at full motorway speed through ten gates, and it charges by the crossing rather than by the day, with the rate varying by the hour and the small hours free. Two of the gates are paired and count once if you pass them within the hour in the same direction. None of this needs to concern you, but it does explain why a route that looks longer on a map is sometimes the one we take.
Then there is the heat. From May to September the difference between a good transfer and a bad one is entirely about the twenty seconds between a door and a car. Our chauffeurs wait with the engine running and the cabin already cold, they park where there is shade or cover rather than where it is convenient, and they come to the door rather than expecting you to find them across a forecourt. It sounds like a small thing in March. It is not a small thing in August.
Ramadan changes the city again. Traffic thins through the afternoon and then everything moves at once around iftar, so a journey that took twenty minutes at noon can take an hour at sunset, and the hour of sunset shifts daily. We plan around it rather than discovering it.
DXB sits in Deira, close to the centre, which is unusual for an airport of its size. Terminal 3 handles Emirates and is a considerable walk in itself.
DWC lies out at Jebel Ali, some 45 km south west, and is in the middle of a very large expansion. Allow for the distance and not just the time.
The financial district and Downtown are minutes apart and yet separated by the road. Access is by tower entrance rather than by street address.

The season runs from October to April, and with it the calendar that fills the hotels: GITEX in October, Art Dubai and the Dubai World Cup in the spring, and a steady flow of conferences at the World Trade Centre in between. Those are the weeks when cars are booked out days ahead, and when holding a chauffeur for the duration is the only arrangement that reliably works.
