What Makes Rome
Different to Drive
Rome does not have one restricted zone, it has a dozen, each with its own hours. The ZTL Centro Storico closes from 6.30am to 6pm Monday to Friday and again on Saturday afternoons. The ZTL Tridente, around Via Condotti and the Spanish Steps, is stricter still and runs to 7pm on weekdays and all Saturday daytime. Trastevere, San Lorenzo and Testaccio then close at night, from 11pm to 3am on Friday and Saturday. Every gate is a camera, and a fine arrives weeks later for a street you entered by accident.
Around all of that sits the Fascia Verde, the low emission zone inside the ring road, active Monday to Saturday and tightened further on pollution days. Taxis and licensed hire vehicles hold the authorisations that let them cross these boundaries legally. That is the practical reason to use a chauffeur here rather than drive yourself: not comfort, access.
The other reason is the surface. Cobbles, one-way lanes barely wider than a car, and a historic centre where the nearest legal stop is often a piazza away from the door.

Roughly 15 km south east, low-cost and charter traffic, and closer to the centre than Fiumicino by some margin.
