Amsterdam is the European city least designed around the car, and that is the whole brief. The canal ring is a set of narrow quays with water on one side, bollards on the other and a cycle lane between you and the pavement. Bicycles have priority in practice as well as in law, they arrive from directions a driver does not expect, and a chauffeur who has not worked here will spend the journey braking.
The city runs a low emission zone that filters older engines, and access to the centre is deliberately constrained by design rather than by charge. Parking is scarce and expensive above ground and largely handled underground or at the park and ride sites on the ring.
