Riyadh has no toll gates and no low emission zone. What it has is scale. The city spreads across a great deal of desert, the districts that matter are far apart, and the road network is built around wide multi-lane arteries where an exit missed is a long way to the next one. A meeting in the King Abdullah Financial District and a dinner in Diriyah are a serious journey apart, and treating them as a short hop is how schedules fall over.
The working day here runs to its own clock. Business tends to start later and run later than in Europe, prayer times punctuate the afternoon and evening, and Friday is the quiet day rather than Sunday. During Ramadan the whole pattern inverts, with the roads emptying before iftar and filling again for most of the night. A chauffeur who works to a European rhythm will be early all day and late in the evening.
The city is also changing quickly, with major construction across the centre and the metro reshaping surface routes. Last month's route is not always this month's.
