Vienna has no low emission zone and no congestion charge, which makes it refreshingly simple to enter. What it has instead is the Kurzparkzone, a short-stay parking regime covering the whole inner city and most of the districts around it, where every space is time-limited and metered. The practical consequence is that a car in Vienna either has somewhere to be or has to keep moving, and the underground garages around the Ring are what make a day of appointments workable.
The first district is ringed by the Ringstrasse and threaded with pedestrian streets, the Graben and the Kärntner Strasse among them. Trams have priority on the Ring and run in both directions on their own lanes. Fiakers, the horse carriages, still work the inner city and set the pace on some streets whether anyone likes it or not.
Austria also sells its motorway pass as a vignette, and it is required the moment a journey leaves the city on a motorway. Ours carry it.
Schwechat lies about 18 km south east, twenty five minutes on a clear road. Straightforward, well signed, and rarely the problem.
