Madrid is straightforward once you are in it. The friction is all at the edges, at the airport and at the boundary of the centre. Here is what a prepared arrival looks like.
- Barajas runs T1, T2 and T3 together and keeps T4 and its satellite T4S separate, linked by an automated shuttle. The terminal is confirmed with your flight number, and the chauffeur waits inside that building.
- The satellite terminal handles much of the long haul traffic, so a flight from Latin America or Asia usually means T4S and a longer walk before you reach anyone. The meeting point is agreed in advance for that reason.
- A low emission zone covers central Madrid, and every vehicle we send is cleared for it. A hotel near Gran Vía or a dinner in Salamanca stays a normal drop-off.

Barajas is four terminals and one of them, T4 Satellite, is a train ride from the other half of T4. Arriving there and walking out to look for a car is a long way to walk before you have even started. We take the flight number, watch the arrival board and put the chauffeur inside the correct hall, which sounds obvious and is precisely the thing that goes wrong when a car is ordered on the pavement.
The second thing Madrid arrivals share is timing. A lot of long haul lands early in the morning, when the city is quiet and the ranks are short, and a lot of European traffic lands in the evening peak, when they are not. Either way the car is already there. If you are late out of the terminal because a bag did not appear, an hour of waiting on international arrivals is included and counted from touchdown.
Atocha and Chamartin work the same way for the high speed trains, which in Spain carry as many business travellers as the airlines. A few numbers help. Barajas sits about fifteen kilometres from the centre and the drive is usually half an hour, longer at the evening peak. Atocha and Chamartin are both inside the city, minutes from most hotels. Toledo is around seventy kilometres, El Escorial fifty, Segovia ninety over the sierra, and the Ribera del Duero estates between a hundred and fifty and two hundred, which is why so many arrivals here turn straight into a day out.
How far is Barajas from central Madrid?
Around thirteen kilometres to the north-east, which is a short run outside peak hours and noticeably longer during them. The pick-up is timed to your flight rather than to a fixed slot.
Which terminal will my chauffeur meet me at?
