El Prat is two terminals a shuttle ride apart, and the one you land in is not always the one your airline is listed under. Add a cruise ship turning round in the port on the same morning and the taxi line outside T1 becomes a queue with a view of the car park. Booking ahead moves all of that before your trip: the flight number is in the booking, the arrival board is watched, and the chauffeur is inside the hall when you come through, not circling outside waiting for a call.
The port matters here as much as the airport. Barcelona is one of the busiest cruise ports in Europe and the terminals sit a long way inside the port gates, well past walking distance from the city. Out of the city, the same car takes you where the airport transfer usually stops. How far is Barcelona airport from the centre?
Around fifteen kilometres to the south-west, which is a short drive outside peak hours. During congress weeks and at the height of summer it takes appreciably longer, so the pick-up is timed to your flight.
